The first full-week of May saw the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings once again feature an international flavor, while the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) flexed its muscles with a solid week of NHL Playoffs coverage. Live coverage of a Norwegian politician’s trial took a spot in the top five for the third-straight week and Formula 1 racing re-entered the rankings along with live snooker coverage to headline the week.
A championship 44 years in the making captured the attention of many Social TV viewers last week, what many call the PGA’s fifth major also resonated well with CoveritLive users, but no event was bigger than Eurosport’s World Championship Snooker coverage as it captured the top spot in the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings.
Droves of Snooker fans kept their eyes fixed to their computers, tablets and mobile devices last week as they watched and chatted live during Eurosport’s world championship coverage. Eurosport drew in excess of 400,000 viewers to its live chat that saw Ronnie O’Sullivan claim his fourth world title with an 18-11 win over Ali Carter at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
After drawing almost 140,000 viewers to its Chelsea/Barcelona and Manchester City/Manchester United European football chats in the last two weeks, Norwegian newspaper VG once again landed in the CiL rankings this week. More than 140,000 viewers clicked into VG’s live Premier League chat over the weekend as Manchester City claimed its first Premier League title since 1968.
ESPN’s SoccerNet also shined in its coverage of European football with its Match Day Live chat coverage of the final day of Premier League action. Almost 50,000 viewers were entertained by Chris Murphy and James Dall’s live commentary throughout the day’s action.
The final two spots in the weekly Social TV rankings were claimed by Sports Illustrated’s Golf.com, which attracted almost 45,000 viewers as Charlie Hanger, Jeff Ritter, Mike Walker and Mick Rouse live blogged the first two rounds of the 2012 PGA Players Championship.
*The CoveritLive blog will release its weekly social TV rankings every Monday. The data for the ranking system is exclusive to events that are tied to a television broadcast and the viewer metric is defined as a reader that actively clicks into a CiL event.
