CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (The NFL Draft Edition)

In a year that has seen many CoveritLive events shine bright, the NFL Draft proved to be one of the brightest stars of 2012. In this week’s special NFL Draft edition of the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings, the draft put up stats as impressive as those that Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III tallied in their decorated collegiate careers.

The three-day event attracted coverage from broadcasters, news organizations, fan sites, individual team sites and the NFL itself. In total, just over 200 chat events were hosted as viewers joined in the social experience to see what players landed on their favorite teams.

ESPN, Yahoo, SI.com and the NFL hosted the five largest chats of the weekend and attracted a total of more than two million viewers. Viewers that clicked into an event followed the action an average of 39 minutes per-visit.

ESPN’s three-day total drew almost 1.2 million viewers to its wall-to-wall chat coverage.

The top-five NFL Draft events attracted in excess of 1.75 million viewers to their live interactive events.

ESPN began its coverage on Thursday and ran its Social TV experience for three straight days with pauses overnight. The Worldwide Leader in Sports drew 1,175,800 viewers throughout the draft. Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner NFL blog ranked second on the Social TV charts on the strength of its audience of 428,266 during the draft’s opening round.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Burke and Tom Mantzouranis provided live engagement and draft analysis for SI.com during the first two days of the draft and charted more than 100,000 viewers during the two events. The final spot in the NFL Draft Social TV rankings was claimed by NFL.com, whose chat hosted by Elliot Harrison entertained more than 43,000 viewers during the opening round.

CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (April 9-15)

The last week of Social Television was largely dominated by international sporting events, with all five spots in the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings being owned by sports coverage. Premier League and FA Cup soccer claimed three of the top five spots, while F1 Chinese Grand Prix and NHL Playoff events rounded out the list.

Finland’s Sanoma News nabbed the top spot in the ratings with its coverage of the F1 Chinese Grand Prix, providing live perspective for all 56 laps of the third round of the 2012 Formula One season. More than 61,000 viewers joined the conversation as German driver Nico Rosberg raced to victory on Sunday.

Norway’s second largest newspaper, VG claimed the second and third spots in the weekly rankings with its book-end coverage of Premier League soccer action, totaling more than 90,000 viewers during its two events. Joining VG in the soccer coverage ranks was ITV, which attracted almost 30,000 viewers to its FA Cup Semifinal coverage of Chelsea and Tottenham that saw Chelsea advance to the final against Liverpool.

The CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Social TV events claimed four of the top 10 CiL events of the week as it kicked off its First Round NHL Playoff coverage. The network’s live stream/live chat dashboard drew an audience of more than 32,000 to its Saturday event and more than 100,000 during its four NHL playoff events.

CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (March 12-18)

Since the 2012 Asia Cup cricket tournament took to the pitch in mid-March, social media has batted and bowled right along with the action. Three ESPN Asia Cup Live chats anchor the inaugural CoveritLive weekly social TV rankings.

The match that garnered the most social media buzz of the week was the India vs. Pakistan showdown and it was followed in the ratings by the contest between India and host-country Bangladesh.  A third cricket tilt landed among the top five social TV events of the week as well, with the India vs. Sri Lanka match claiming the fifth position.

French broadcaster TF1’s social coverage of France’s incarnation of the popular reality singing TV competition, The Voice was the lone entertainment entry among the top five, generating almost 50,000 clicks from its readers during the season’s fourth episode.

ITV’s CoveritLive chat for the Champions League Round of 16 soccer match between Chelsea and Napoli notched a fourth-place finish, while the highest ranking U.S. chat was ESPN’s GameDay Live chat that it held on the opening day of the 2012 NCAA Basketball Championship.
