After two weeks of pageantry, elation, disappointment, world records, ground-breaking achievements and unbridled patriotism, the 2012 London Olympic Games have drawn to a close. The Games proved to be like no other before, as social media and Social TV took center stage alongside the world’s best athletes. During the past week Social TV viewers embraced Yahoo’s Fourth Place Medal blog’s coverage as it swept the weekly CoveritLive Social TV medal stand.

More than 450,000 viewers joined the conversation as Carli Lloyd played the hero’s role for the Americans, scoring two goals to help them claim a 2-1 win that avenged their 2011 World Cup final loss to the Japanese.

An audience in excess of 400,000 viewers got social during the 122-plus minute game that culminated with Alex Morgan’s leaping header goal that advanced the U.S. to the gold medal match.

The second day of the men’s and women’s gymnastics individual apparatus finals clinched the third spot in the CiL weekly rankings. The day was to be Gabby Douglas’s shot at third medal with men’s still rings, women’s uneven bars and men’s vault highlighting the day’s competition. Douglas did not land on the medal stand for her uneven bars routine, but Yahoo once again entertained a sizable crowd as more than 320,000 viewers logged into its events.

The celebration that is the Olympics Closing Ceremony proved to be quite popular with Social TV viewers as well. Almost 270,000 Social TV viewers chatted about the ceremony that featured a highly-anticipated reunion performance by the Spice Girls.

Gymnastics once again shined bright on the third and final day of the individual apparatus finals, as Aly Raisman one again grabbed the spotlight after helping the U.S. clinch team gold a few days prior with her floor routine.  An audience of almost 250,000 logged in to chat about the inquiry that helped Raisman claim bronze in the balance beam and her monstrous routine that landed her gold in the floor exercise.
