CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (June 25-July 1)

By Spencer Kitley

The last week of June closed in much the same fashion as every other week of the month, as coverage of Euro 2012 clung tightly to the top spots in the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings. For the first time in three weeks, the Euros did not sweep the rankings as coverage of the 2012 NBA Draft notched the final two spots in the top five.

German publisher, Bild finished out its strong run through Euro 2012 this week, claiming its fourth-consecutive top ranking and landing at least the top three spots for the third-straight week. Bild’s live coverage of the tournament’s second semifinal between Germany and Italy attracted an audience of almost 700,000 viewers and ranked third among all of Bild’s Euro events in June. Coverage of the first semifinal match between Spain and Portugal drew the second-largest viewership with more than 500,000 viewers, while the Euro final that pitted Spain against Italy entertained an audience of almost 436,000.

For the first time since the NBA Western Conference Finals in early June, the NBA once again cracked the top five this week, with ESPN’s coverage of the 2012 NBA Draft claiming the fourth spot. More than 300,000 viewers joined the event to watch four University of Kentucky underclassman selected in the first round of the draft. The NBA notched the fifth-biggest event of the week as its draft event on NBA.com attracted more than 90,000 basketball fans.

CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (June 4-10)

By Spencer Kitley

A confluence of major sporting events attracted and entertained television viewers by the millions last week and the popularity of those events laid the ground work for the most social CoveritLive week of the year. The first three days of UEFA Euro 2012 dominated the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings by claiming three of the top five spots, while the culmination of the NBA’s Western Conference Finals and the controversial outcome of the Manny Paquiao/Timothy Bradley boxing match helped push the viewing total of the top five events over 2.25 million viewers.

German publisher Bild achieved overwhelming success with its coverage of the first three days of UEFA Euro 2012, drawing an average of 440,000 viewers to each of its three chat events. Bild topped the CoveritLive charts with its coverage of the first day of Group C play as more than 590,000 viewers clicked into the chat for the match’s involving Spain, Italy, Ireland and Croatia. The Group A chat on the first day of play drew more than 434,000 viewers to notch the third spot, while Group B landed at No. 5 as more than 290,000 German fans kept up with their home team.

After seeing the young guns of the Oklahoma City Thunder fall in a two games to none hole to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Western Conference Finals, fans quickly ramped up their interest in the series last week as the Thunder battled back to close the series margin and stood on the verge of the NBA Finals in Game 6. In excess of 500,000 viewers chatted along during the final game of the series and witnessed a changing of the guard in the Western Conference as the young Thunder eliminated the aging Spurs.

ESPN’s coverage of the 12-round, pay-per-view WBO Welterweight title fight drew more than 400,000 viewers, totaling 100,000 more viewers than May’s Mayweather/Cotto fight. Additionally, more than 200,000 participants tuned in Yahoo’s live chat to watch the match that ended in a controversial split decision.

CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (May 28-June 3)

By Spencer Kitley

Last week, as the NBA Playoffs rolled full-force ahead into a pair of highly-competitive and exciting Conference Finals series, the social media buzz around the events reached a fevered pitch. In addition to the enthusiasm around the NBA action, a pair of international football matches nabbed key spots on the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings, while the premier of a popular Brazilian reality TV show proved popular as well.

In Norway, many European football fans spent their Pentecost Monday holiday watching their favorite team and joining the conversation about the games online. Norwegian publisher VG landed on the list for the fourth time in the last five weeks as more than 61,000 viewers joined its live match day chat to rank atop the rankings

The Brazilian reality TV series, A Fazenda (The Farm), debuted its fifth season last week and drew a considerable social TV audience as well. Almost 52,000 viewers chatted along on humor site Kibe Loco as they were introduced to the cast of celebrities that will live together in a Survivor-style game on a farm this summer.

Yahoo Mexico’s coverage of the 2012 Esperanzas Toulon (Hopes of Toulon) attracted a crowd of more than 27,000 to its live chat during the Holanda vs. Mexico football match.

NBA.com has launched a new social TV experience for the Eastern and Western Conference Finals, allowing fans to watch a side-by-side CoveritLive Twitter feed of both teams within each game’s dashboard.  A group of relevant Twitter feeds for each team has been pulled together using CoveritLive’s Twitter enhancements. This allows the NBA to only pull the most engaging info into the event. The Miami Heat’s CiL event drew more than 24,000 viewers during the first game of the Eastern Conference Finals to claim the fourth spot in this week’s rankings.

That same night, ESPN’s Daily Dime Live, chat event attracted almost 24,000 viewers into its second screen experience as the Heat defeated the Celtics 115-111 to take a 1-0 series lead.
