CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (July 9-15)

By Spencer Kitley

Home runs, knockouts and money in the bank sounds like a long series of sports clichés, but this week those clichés ruled the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings as Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby, a British boxing bout and a WWE pay-per-view event landed among the weekly top five.

ESPN’s live chat coverage of the 2012 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game was the top ranking event of the week. More than 100,000 viewers got social during the slugfest as ESPN’s David Kull, Eric Karabell, Jayson Stark and Matt Meyers provided live commentary throughout the event.

The highly-controversial British boxing match between David Haye and Dereck Chisora notched the No. 2 spot in the weekly rankings with more than 60,000 viewers joining Eurosport’s live chat for the match that saw Haye win via a fifth-round knockout.

The mixed martial arts UFC148 event claimed two spots in last week’s top –five, but Yahoo’s coverage of the middleweight championship bout between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen extended into this past Monday. The event drew almost 60,000 social TV viewers and landed at No. 3 this week.

Money in the Bank is always a popular match with WWE fans and on Sunday, July 15 almost 30,000 viewers got social during the MITB pay-per-view event to watch John Cena and Dolph Ziggler win their respective matches and a pair of championship title shots.

The final spot in the weekly CiL Social TV rankings was claimed by the Australian Football League for 16th round action of Australian rules football. Almost 20,000 viewers joined the conversation during the Sydney Swans route of the West Coast Eagles.

CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (April 2-8)

In a week that saw a new NCAA Basketball champion crowned, a green jacket awarded and the commencement of another Major League Baseball season, sport was king in the realm of Social TV. Live blogging and social TV coverage of The Masters weighed heavily in the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings, earning two spots in the top five and nabbing six of the top 10 spots for the week.

Sitting atop the charts during the first week in April was Eurosport France’s live coverage of  the Rally of Portugal, which attracted more than 60,000 viewers as Norwegian driver Mads Ostberg claimed the fourth event of the 2012 World Rally Championships.

The largest Masters event came during the opening round when Sports Illustrated’s Golf.com drew almost 58,000 viewers to land in the No. 2 spot in this week’s rankings. ESPN’s live coverage of the first round also drew more than 50,000 viewers and grabbed the fifth position, as England’s Lee Westwood took the early lead at Augusta.

ESPN also earned the No. 3 position in the weekly ratings, as its marathon two-week countdown of the 500 best MLB players culminated with a 2.5-hour countdown chat to reveal its top 10 players of 2012. More than 57,000 viewers joined in to see if their favorite flame-thrower or slugger would take the top spot, but in the end it was Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim star Albert Pujols who claimed the crown.

The fourth ranked event of the week was the official race coverage of the 2012 XChanging Boat Race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Fourteen different television networks around the world carried the race live and almost 55,000 viewers joined the social coverage of the 158th-annual Boat Race as Cambridge notched an 80-76 victory.
