CoveritLive Weekly: Top five Social TV events (May 6-12)

The first full-week of May saw the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings once again feature an international flavor, while the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) flexed its muscles with a solid week of NHL Playoffs coverage. Live coverage of a Norwegian politician’s trial took a spot in the top five for the third-straight week and Formula 1 racing re-entered the rankings along with live snooker coverage to headline the week.

Champions League semifinal draws large International CoveritLive audience

The UEFA Champions League is one of the most prestigious European football tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition. The final of the tourney is the most watched annual sporting event worldwide, but the Social TV buzz is already stirring around the globe. The feverish interest showed during the semifinals and was particularly strong during the second leg of the semifinal between Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona, last week.

More than 500,000 viewers joined live CoveritLive chats as Chelsea pulled off one of the unlikeliest comebacks in Champions League history with its 2-2 draw against Barcelona on Tuesday. Over 40 news outlets, broadcasters and web sites provided a live engagement Social TV experience during the match that sent the London club into the final, 3-2, on aggregate and eliminated the defending champion.   
 
The top five Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona Social TV events drew more than 328,000 viewers to their events to average almost 66,000 viewers per-event.
 
 
Swedish publisher Aftonbladet attracted the largest audience to its Champions chat, drawing almost 110,000 viewers. Norwegian newspaper VG  garnered nearly 75,000 viewers to its chat to just edge French broadcaster TF1, which drew almost 73,000 to its event.
 
Champions League socialization was not relegated to Europe, as Yahoo Deportes in Mexico attracted in excess of 28,000 viewers to its event and domestic leaders SI.com and ESPN drew a total of more than 30,000 to their chat experiences. The global social trend extended to South America as well, with Yahoo Brazil captivating more than 15,000 users.

CoveritLive Weekly: Top five social TV events (April 16-22)

 

Soccer and Hockey and MMA, Oh my! For the second straight week sports made a clean sweep of the top five spots on the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings with the soccer showdown between Chelsea and FC Barcelona claiming two spots in the ratings, the CBC returning to the top five for the second straight week with its Hockey Night coverage and ESPN topping the charts with its UFC 145 chat.
 
The growing popularity of mixed martial arts in America proved its strength in this week’s rankings. ESPN’s coverage of the much anticipated UFC 145 event buoyed by the light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans nabbed the No. 1 spot in the CiL ratings. Its MMA experts Brett Okamoto, Josh Gross, Chuck Mindenhall and Chad Dundas’ expert analysis of the pay-per-view event garnered more than 66,000 viewers. 
 
 
Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal proved to be a goal scorer in the world of Social TV, attracting in excess of 120,000 viewers to a pair of live chats. French broadcaster TF1 claimed the second position in the weekly rankings with just over 60,000 viewers, while the UK’s ITV nipped at their heels with just under 60,000 users in its event. 
 
Belgian pro soccer jumped into the rankings for the first time as Lalibre’s coverage of the Club Bruges vs. Anderlecht match entertained Jupiler League fans.
 
Canada’s CBC remained in the top five again this week with it live stream/live chat dashboard coverage of Hockey Night in Canada. The network attracted more than 85,000 viewers to its top two NHL Playoff First Round chats of the week to round out the top five and claim the sixth position as well.
