CoveritLive Weekly: Top five Social TV events (May 6-12)

By Spencer Kitley

The first full-week of May saw the weekly CoveritLive Social TV rankings once again feature an international flavor, while the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) flexed its muscles with a solid week of NHL Playoffs coverage. Live coverage of a Norwegian politician’s trial took a spot in the top five for the third-straight week and Formula 1 racing re-entered the rankings along with live snooker coverage to headline the week.

Eurosport UK, landed atop the weekly chart with its Social TV coverage of the 2013 World Snooker Championships in Sheffield, England. An audience of more than 151,000 viewers joined the conversation as Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan claimed his fifth world championship.

Norwegian broadcaster, TV2 earned the No. 2 position in the weekly ratings after grabbing a spot in the top five each of the last two weeks for its live coverage of the appeal hearing of imprisoned politician Rune Øygard. More than 60,000 viewers got social about the appeal hearing within TV2’s live second screen dashboard.

The CBC captured the third and fifth positions for the week and had a handful of events just outside of the top five. Four of the top seven Social TV events of the week were for the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada coverage, while six of the top 21 CiL events for the week were Hockey Night events. Audiences of more than 38,000 and almost 29,000 propelled the Canadian broadcaster into the third and fifth positions, respectively.

Finnish publisher, Ilta-Sanomat claimed the fourth position with its live coverage of the F1 Spanish Grand Prix, marking the third time in eight weeks that it has notched a spot in the top five.  Almost 30,000 viewers joined the chat as Spanish driver Fernando Alonso raced to victory for the Ferrari team.

*The CoveritLive blog releases its weekly social TV rankings every Monday. The data for the ranking system is exclusive to events that are tied to a television broadcast and the viewer metric is defined as a reader that actively clicks into a CiL event.
